Lutwyche Guerrilla Art
Hi, I'm Alfred. Welcome to the Lutwyche 40|30 Project.
Lutwyche is one of Brisbane's busiest arteries and oldest suburbs. Decades of traffic congestion on Lutwyche Road have squeezed vibrancy from the precinct, making it look tired and uncared for. But step into the backstreets, and Lutwyche is a beautiful place full of wonderful people.
This page chronicles my quest to encourage public art throughout Lutwyche. It aims to breathe vibrancy and happiness into its streetscapes, and to encourage Brisbane residents to take ownership of our public spaces.
During 2012, 40 public art pieces will be installed across Lutwyche and posted on this page. My hope is that you will install a piece yourself, and that collectively an additional 30 pieces can be installed by the year's end, thus fulfilling the 40|30 goal. To get involved, simply create a piece, install it, and send a photo to [email protected].

Metamorphosis #1
Spotted: August 16, 2012 @ Corner Lutwyche Road & Maygar Street. Count: 3|0
Do you think traffic light poles are boring?
We think traffic light poles are boring.
Tonight a pole sited at one of Lutwyche's prominent corners underwent a metamorphosis, transforming from a staid grey bollard into a butterfly covered pedestal. The butterflies are dollar shop finds and are magnetically attached to the pole. Track down the installation and add your own or take some home for your fridge artworks!
Brightening up Lutwyche is that simple. Find some simple craft items, run with your ideas and take a photo to share with this blog and the rest of our community. Email your photos to [email protected] and share in the love! =)

Koala Fishing
Spotted: August 12, 2012 @ Kedron Brook Busway Station (in Kedron Brook). Count: 2|0
"Koala Fishing" is a commentary on the loss of native habitats in South East Queensland, which are increasingly replaced by landscaped parks and gardens filled with introduced species. This has a flow-on effect on native species abundance in our suburb.
Koala fishes with a bamboo fishing rod and string line, looking up at the concrete concourses of Kedron Brook Busway Station. He is very cute and is beloved by dogs enjoying the off-leash areas on the north bank of the Brook.
Like Koala Fishing? Join the Lutwyche 40|30 project by adding your own public art to the suburb and sending a photo to [email protected]!

Lutwyche Station Wish Tree
Spotted: August 7, 2012 @ Lutwyche Busway Station (west concourse). Count: 1|0
The Wish Tree asks passers-by to write one thing they like or wish about Lutwyche or life in general. Lots of lovely people have stopped to contribute. Messages include:
"I wish I had a girlfriend"
"I LOVE brush turkeys"
"I wish that all buses would stop at Truro Street Station"
"I love Brother Espresso"
"I wish every day was a Sunday"
"I like Kedron Brook Bikeway"
Thanks to everyone who has contributed, and if you haven't yet - get down there before it leaves*.
*Pun intended! ;)
Update (11/7/12): Lutwyche Wish Tree was removed overnight by BCC or Translink. Kill joys....
